Description:
From humble beginnings, the Whanganui River descends from Mount Tongariro, Central North Island. Following forest-clad valley's gathering waters from the mountain streams, Mangtepopo, Waione and Waipari, before reaching the remote riverside cabin 'Te Whare O Nga Whio'(The house of the Blue Ducks).
Go Bush Wilderness Adventures, a small family operated eco-tourism venture offer 'Wilderness Cabin Stays' as a unique introduction to your 'Whanganui River experience.
Set on over 3000 acres of private native forest, your 4x4 eco bush adventure begins by meeting on Day One at Go Bush Entrance, State Highway 42, between Taumarunui and Turangi. Your driver/guides (Self drive option available for experienced drivers.) load gear onto 4x4 Suzuki Jeeps.
Followed by morning tea at Go Bush base.
Begin the 15km journey into the Head-waters of the Whanganui River, this fully forested trail follows the old logging trails of the pioneer days.
Stopping at various points of interest, taking around 2 hours to reach the riverside cabin. Lunch at riverside cabin. Guests are invited to help in the preparation and laying of a tradional
maori hangi. While dinner is cooking, there is the choice of a light riverside walk, exploring the many sea shell fossils or just relax in the serenity of a true wilderness atmosphere. Hangi dinner
around 6.00pm , then spend the night around the outside camp fire.
Day Two:
Breakfast, available, a bush walk into Pukepoto Forest. Giant Rimu, Matai and Kaihikatia trees dominate one of the last magnificent stands of virgin bush in the area. Lunch, load up and travel back to base.
