Description
The Whanganui Riverboat Centre Museum is a Unique New Zealand Maritime Heritage site located on the banks of the Whanganui River in the heart of Wanganui. Here you can discover the amazing history of the riverboat era when the Victorian river steamers of Hatrick & Companys fleet transversed the 231 kilometres and 239 rapid from Wanganui Town to Taumaranui in the heart of the North Island.
Visitors can experience river travel as our ancestors did aboard Paddle Steamer Waimarie, New Zealand's last Paddle Steamer (Est1900), still steam powered and coal fired. P/S Waimarie offers leisurely scheduled cruises 13k upriver to the village of Upokongaro and return. Charter, dinner, lunch & BBQ cruises are available by arrangement. Groups are a specialty.
Also available is the Motor Vessel Wairue (Est1904) a unique tunnel drive vessel, a pioneer of the service above Pipiriki. Wairua is available for Day long picnic cruises to Hipango Park some 26k upriver from Wanganui. Hipango Park is a large picnic ground surrounded by native bush and onjly accessible by river.
